Dedicated to the memory of Eth Roper

On Saturday 20 June 2020, Eth Roper passed away peacefully at home with her three sons.

This site is a lasting tribute to Eth and all are welcome here.

She was much loved and will always be remembered.

As an unfortunate consequence of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a formal funeral service for Eth was not possible at the time of her passing.

On the morning of Friday 3 July 2020, a farewell cortege of the hearse bearing Eth to the crematorium took place place through the village of East Leake. The hearse departed Eth's residence (51 Bateman Road, East Leake) and proceeded along Bateman Road, past St Mary's Church and through the centre of the village along Main Street before turning up Castle Hill.

Our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all who were able to turn out and pay their last respects along the route. A special thanks to those members of the band who played a moving and emotional fanfare as the hearse drove by. We know Eth would have loved that wonderful tribute.

A private family ‘Celebration of Life’ memorial event was held at St Mary's Church on 26 December 2020, where Eth's ashes were interred alongside those of her beloved husband, Harry.

We invite you all to 'stroll' through this tribute site and light a 'digital' candle, leave your thoughts and memories, post a favourite photo of Eth and/or make a donation in her name.

Thank you for your love, support and kindness.

Matt, Sam & Dave Roper

Eth was the eldest of 4 girls born into a deeply loving and caring family in the North West of England. During her youth she lived with her dear parents, affectionate sisters and her very special Granny who had a huge influence on Eth's upbringing - particularly during the war years. After finishing school, Eth trained as a teacher - with a focus on supporting children with special educational needs and troubled backgrounds. She truly loved her teaching work and was particularly passionate about helping challenged and disadvantaged children. As a young woman, Eth enjoyed sports - especially running - but her real passion was in the Arts, specifically music, dance and singing. She sang in cathedrals, churches and weddings as well as taking part in pantomimes and operatic musicals. In fact, it was through her participation in musicals that she met her cherished husband, Harry - an event that was to change her life forever. Shortly after their marriage, Harry and Eth moved to the Midlands to follow his work where they established their new home. After a number of years patiently waiting, they began their family with 3 wonderful little boys arriving in close succession. The village of East Leake became the hub for their young family with Eth immersing herself into the community where, for over 13 years, she supervised the running of the local Play School, helping shape the lives of so many young children. Eth was always supporting her 3 boys across the extensive range of school, sports and activities in which they were involved - not least of all washing mountains of sports clothes, nursing their impressive array of sporting injuries and cooking vast quantities of food for the 4 ever-hungry men in her life. All of which Eth undertook without complaint and with love, care and deep devotion to 'her boys'. After her retirement Eth became widely involved in voluntary work and for many years supported Cancer Research UK and Sue Ryder. She also happily gave her time to help out at the local village primary school. Even after the sudden loss of her beloved Harry in 1999, Eth continued to devote herself to her voluntary work and her loving family - not least of all her 6 wonderful grandchildren. Eth was exceptionally proud of her grandchildren and the compassionate, kind and caring young people they are growing up to be. Eth also felt blessed to have had so many dear and treasured friends who remained a key part of her life over the many years in the village. Eth often reflected that she had enjoyed a life full of everything she could have ever wished for; a life rich with love, kindness, friendship and a wonderful caring family. Her legacy lives on through her 3 wonderful sons, their loving families and her cherished grandchildren. Eth will always be much loved and fondly remembered.
